How this all started

Hi! Welcome to Colombian Jukebox, your best place to learn about all things Colombian culture.

I’m Rebecca Liloy, a New Yorker with Colombian roots that run deep into Cartagena de Indias. While Cartagena holds most of my heart, I’ve also got a little salsa flavor from Cali mixed in there too.

Growing up, I spent all of my summer vacations in Cartagena, running around the hot asphalt, learning to enjoy the steaming hot delicious food in sweltering weather, soaking up the rhythms of vallenato and champeta, and cherishing unforgettable moments with my family. All these experiences created a strong connection with Colombia, but it also brought challenges. Reconciling my New York identity with my Colombian heritage was not always easy.

Over time, I learned to embrace both sides, and music was the best way I knew how. It isn’t unusual to find my personal playlists filled with heartbreak vallenatos, empowering hip hop anthems, and bubblegum 90s boy band music. Through music, I was able to accept and embrace my diverse influences.

In 2018, I decided to make Colombia my home, and in 2021, Colombian Jukebox was born. What started as a Spotify playlist for expats craving a little more than just mainstream hits has grown into a blog and a podcast.

Here at Colombian Jukebox, you’ll find my experiences as I connect with, learn about, and build bridges between traditions and its evolving cultural scene. You’ll also hear from others who share their stories and expertise, adding depth and diversity to the blog. From the latest musical trends to must-visit places, this is your spot to explore the beautiful blend of Colombia’s past and present.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.
